A full traditional Thai massage, followed by hot herbal compresses pressed along the whole body with extra time on the back. We make and steam the compresses ourselves, from herbs grown on our family's land.
Most guests who book this treatment come for the same reason: they want a proper Thai massage, and they want the soothing warmth of the herbal compress as well. It is our most requested treatment for a tired or aching lower back — after a long flight, a day of trekking, or too many hours at a desk. The session begins with a full traditional Thai massage. Your therapist works along the body's energy lines with palm and thumb pressure and assisted stretches, without oil, while you stay dressed in the loose cotton clothing we provide. The compress comes afterwards. It is pressed and rolled over the whole body, with extra time on the back and shoulders where most people carry their tension. Each compress comes straight from the steamer, and as it begins to cool it is swapped for a fresh one, so the warmth stays gentle and steady from the first minute to the last. That is the part guests remember. What is inside the compress is the part we are proudest of. We make them ourselves, in our own kitchen, from herbs grown on our family's land: plai root (ไพล), kaffir lime peel (ผิวมะกรูด, makrut), lemongrass (ตะไคร้), turmeric (ขมิ้น) and tamarind leaves (ใบมะขาม). Almost every salon in Chiang Mai buys its compresses ready-made. We do not, because making them ourselves is the only way to be certain what goes into them and how fresh they are. When the steam opens the cloth, you will smell the difference before you feel it. In Thai tradition this combination of gentle warmth and herbs — luk prakob — has been used for generations to ease stiff, tired muscles and to help the body let go after deep bodywork. Please choose a different treatment if you are pregnant, have sensitive or broken skin, or have had surgery recently. If you are not sure, tell us when you book and we will suggest something that suits you better.
